Organising a wedding reception can take up a lot of time, attention – and wedding budget! But you can put on an excellent spread at an affordable cost with a bit of forward planning. You’ll want guests to eat well and to cover all of their requirements, whether that’s vegetarian food or catering for allergies. With careful consideration and some knowledge about what your options are, you’ll be able to get great catering without breaking the bank – no need to worry about how to clean a gas stove after cooking yourself for 200 guests!

Wedding reception: Choosing the catering service

There are positives and negatives to different types of catering. Depending of your type of wedding, here are three options to think about when it comes to choosing the catering:

Sit-down meal

how to select your reception caterers

Image: Heera Caterers

This is the classic option, and one that allows you to control costs well. Take your overall budget and work out a cost per head, not forgetting to factor in any additional expenditure for dietary needs. One potential extra cost to consider is waiting staff. The more guests you have, the more staff you will need to pay for.

Buffet

One of the financial advantages of a buffet is there’s not much need for waiting staff. Whereas a sit-down meal will give guests limited options, a buffet gives you the chance to cater for everyone and offer plenty of choice. However, you may have to pay extra for serving dishes, and you’ll have to pay for a large amount of food, so be careful when planning how much you think you will need.

Small plates/cocktail party

If you want a more free-flowing reception, a cocktail party style may be the one for you. As you won’t be paying for a main course or desserts, you can potentially keep costs down. Instead, you’ll present a selection of canapés and small plates. There will be less per plate, but you’ll give guests more choice. However, with a more relaxed eating set-up, guests can be inclined to drink a little more, so pay close attention to your drinks budget.

Wedding reception: Choosing the caterers

The supplier is a key decision too when it comes to wedding reception catering. You’ll not only want to ensure that the food is what you want, but that you can afford it too!

Caterers for hire

reception catering

Image: Akanksha Caterers

You might want to go down this route if you have a recommendation or if the venue doesn’t offer their own catering. Make sure you get a detailed quote so that there is no possibility of additional charges down the line.

In-house caterers

The big positive of using in-house caterers is that they will take care of everything. Also, you’ll have their price factored into the overall cost, which will give you an easier overview of your costs. It’ll probably be easier to alter plans as you go with in-house caterers at no extra cost as well. For example, if you’ve got guests with special requirements, talk to your caterer and they’ll be able to come up with suggestions.

Do-It-Yourself

This is definitely the cheapest option. You’ll save money by not employing caterers, but do you really want to add to the stress by doing your own food and having to think about how to clean a gas stove before you go on your honeymoon? If this is the option for you, rope in as many friends and family members as possible to help.

Now that you’ve got a good idea about what your options are, and the budget considerations you need to factor in, you can make a plan. Then you can start looking forward to that tasty part of your big day!

Abirami and Dilshan’s Elegant Australian Wedding

BWedding Invitations has sent us a beautiful real wedding with stunningly elegant details. Abirami and Dilshan met while studying in Deloitte but had to maintain a long distance relationship for a while. Soon Dilshan proposed to her in what can be described as a dramatic proposal and what followed was a gorgeous wedding with some vibrant pictures! Enjoy this week’s real wedding!

Our favorite moments of the wedding…

Our favorite moment was when we first saw each other at the Hindu wedding, we could not stop grinning at each other. We were completely oblivious to all the wedding commotion happening around us.

We had the most fun…

Dil and I had epic levels of fun during our first dance. We had choreographed a special number to the song You Give Me Something by Jamiroquai, which incorporated plenty of twirls to show off my layered lehenga skirt. It was such an upbeat way to open up the dance floor for the evening.

I cried when…

I was overcome with emotion during my Reception speech as I looked around the room at our family and closest friends. We were grateful beyond measure to have so many loved ones celebrating our love with us.

My wedding style was…

Modern and elegant, staying true to key traditional elements.

It was most important to me that…

Making sure that our personality as a couple was reflected in our wedding events. We wanted to keep things simple, fun and above all, we wanted our loved ones to relax and enjoy the celebrations.

Most valuable advice for future Brides?

Make decisions together and back each other. with Indian weddings, it’s not unusual to find yourself in a position where you feel like you need to balance everyone’s views on how things should be.  Make sure you prioritize own vision as a couple, above all else.

Take it all in. Your wedding day will fly by in the blink of an eye. Make sure you have meditative moments to revel in the energy, the love and the fun of your wedding day.

Look at the bigger picture. There will be things that go wrong, despite all the meticulous planning. On your wedding day, just breathe and let these little issues pass. After all, the day is only as fun as you make it!

Communicate your vision with confidence. Don’t be shy to articulate your wish list with suppliers, they’ve seen it all before and can provide valuable advice. Where possible, meet with your suppliers in person. Putting a face to a name will help with all your subsequent dealings.

About The Couple

How we met

We both met in our graduate year at Deloitte, our first meeting could not have been more unromantic. Despite us having very contrasting personalities, we became good friends over the year. It took a long time for us to admit our feelings, despite our closest friends subconsciously pushing us towards each other. Our friendship evolved into love, and as they say, ‘The rest is history’.

When I knew he was the one

We both knew that we had a good thing quite early on into our relationship. We were good friends before we started dating, which made us comfortable around each other, whether it be acting the fool, debating those serious topics, or laughing out loud at a good joke.

Marriage to us means

This line from RM Drake beautifully captures what love means to us: “Love is a touch of magic and a handful of dreams”. To us, marriage celebrates this love for a lifetime.

The proposal

During the year leading up to our engagement, Dilshan had moved to Melbourne for work. At that time, we had both met each other’s parents and we were starting to discuss the prospect of sharing our lives together. Our six-year anniversary came and went. We had a romantic dinner reflecting back on our relationship. A mid-dinner call from my father to Dilshan’s phone did arouse my sneaky suspicions, but at the end of the evening, there was still no proposal, nor a ring.

A couple of weeks later, my girlfriends wanted to organise a catch up at my apartment, but little did I know that Dilshan was orchestrating this ‘catch-up’ behind the scenes. Friday night came, and the girls played their roles well, routinely texting me saying they were on the way. When the doorbell rang, I buzzed the girls up and was busy doing some last minute frantic cleaning. I was mid-way through unloading my dishwasher and in bursts Dilshan, who had secretly flown in from Melbourne that afternoon!

I was in such a state of shock that I didn’t even register the fact that he was down on one knee, holding in his hand the most beautiful diamond ring, set in a rose gold band (exactly like the one I had dropped so many hints about). When it all finally sunk in, of course, the answer was yes! I did love that he was successfully able to outwit my cluey and suspicious nature. He told me to pack an overnight bag and whisked me away to a romantic dinner at Flying Fish Jones Bay Wharf, which boasted magnificent views of Sydney harbor.

The Details

Wedding Planning

13 months seems like ample time to plan a wedding, but time literally flies. We enjoyed our post-engagement bliss for one month before locking in a venue. We had attended many friends’ weddings and had a fair idea about Sydney wedding venues. The only challenge was trying to coordinate auspicious dates with our pundit and the availability of our preferred venues. As a result of the to and fro, and because we wanted to celebrate both my South Indian Hindu background and Dilshan’s Sri Lankan Buddhist faith, we ended up having our Hindu wedding on a Sunday and our Buddhist wedding on the following Friday. A Friday Reception worked out well in hindsight as a nice gate-opener to the weekend. Securing suppliers for Sundays and Fridays is generally a lot easier than Saturdays. The gap between the two events worked well in terms of planning unique elements for each event.

We prioritized all the major wedding decisions using a checklist we found online. We retained all the key decision making on the major wedding items – venues, outfits, photography, and décor, whilst delegating smaller tasks to family and friends. Tasks we delegated include transport, place cards, wedding favors, wishing well setup and pre-wedding events. We left all the ceremonial ritual aspects to our parents. As a couple, we made final decisions on smaller tasks as necessary.

Key Professionals

INVITATIONS: We ordered all of our wedding stationery from B Wedding Invitations. I was obsessed with laser cut details at the time, and they have so many beautiful designs we could choose from. I was even able to send them an image of Ganesh, which they imprinted with ease.

PHOTO & VIDEO: We secured photography and videography services with Splendid Photos & Video. We really thought outside the box in relation to booking wedding professionals (ie. not just Indian suppliers). Splendid sat down with us prior to our wedding days in order to understand the nuances of our respective cultural ceremonies. We were also given a reasonable quote for bundling both photo and video services across two full event days. They were professional and creative and gave us plenty of direction on the day.

HAIR & MAKEUP: Hair and makeup are important to lock in early. I had my heart set on Gather and Stitch Beauty, after hearing so many positive reviews from my close friends. The G&S team was a pleasure to work with. Not only were they fun, they made us all look wow, and were instrumental in keeping me cool, calm and collected on the big day.

Wedding Shopping

With about four days of leave, I had just enough time to do some wedding shopping in Chennai, since my family had good local knowledge of stores, tailors, and jewelers in the city.

During my three shopping days, I prioritized clothing over accessories, as I already had quite the collection of temple jewelry from SukraJewellers and GRT Jewellers, being a Bharatanatyam dancer. I also had plenty of antique gold and kundan pieces I had accumulated over the years from markets and stores in India.

Ideally, I would have loved to have swung by Mumbai to pick out Reception outfits. However, without the time, I took to Instagram and discovered Carma, an India-based online store, which curates bridal outfits and accessories from a range of Indian designers. Upon my initial inquiry, they assigned me a dedicated sales assistant via WhatsApp. They were extremely professional and went above and beyond to help me source the perfect outfit for my reception by liaising with designers and communicating customization requirements.

Some designers were more flexible than others. I had a difficult time finding a pure white saree for the Buddhist ceremony. I had my heart set on a Sabyasachi saree but they were unwilling to customize the colors of their designs. I then discovered Shyamal&Bhumika. I just loved their signature antique gold floral embroidery work. All their designs are fully customizable in terms of color and style. I liaised with them via WhatsApp and FaceTime to customize my pieces.

I was very lucky, as the fitting was perfect for all the items I ordered online. I had a tailor in Sydney take my measurements correctly before passing them on to the designers via WhatsApp.

TIP: I did have one touch-and-go situation with Shyamal&Bhumika when their definition of ivory was closer to gold than white, which is different to what we know to be ivory here in Australia. I luckily caught onto this before confirming the final order. To keep things simple, I told them to simply customize the saree to white, rather than get into the complications of shades of white.

Wedding Events

Wedding events took place at the beginning of September 2016  in Sydney, followed by an overseas Reception in Colombo, Sri Lanka in December:

Mehendi Lunch – Saturday PM, Private Residence, Sydney, 60 guests.

Hindu Wedding – Sunday AM, Miramare Gardens, Sydney, 300 guests.

Poruwa Ceremony – Friday PM, Sergeants Mess, Sydney 200 guests.

Wedding Reception– Friday PM, Sergeants Mess, Sydney 200 guests.

Overseas Reception Soiree – Dec, The Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo, 120 guests.

Mehendi

THEME: Boho Garden Party.

VENUE: My family lives in Canberra so in order to accommodate our international guests here in Sydney, we rented a rockin’ holiday home at North Curl Curl via Stayz, just a stone’s throw away from the beach. The garden at the home provided a beautiful canvas to channel all things Boheme.

DECOR: We did all the styling on our own. I bought silk florals and cascading greens from Spotlight; outdoor furniture and cushions from Ikea and used some playful decor found around the house to create a relaxed outdoor environment for the girls. The sun was shining bright but it was still a chilly September day so we created a warm outdoor cocoon using a king size quilt.

FOOD & DRINKS: I wanted my guests to enjoy a hearty South Indian lunch so Taj Caterers was able to set up an outdoor kitchen serving hot crispy dosas fresh off the stove! Our guests kept going back for more and more, just like we wanted.

ABI’S OUTFIT: Beige cropped anarkali with antique gold floral embroidery by Shyamal&Bhumika.

South Indian Wedding

THEME: Modern, elegant with traditional Indian elements.

VENUE: Both Dilshan and I are the eldest siblings and the first to get married in our respective families, so we needed to find a venue that could accommodate a large number of guests. We also wanted to find a venue where our guests could enjoy indoor and outdoor spaces. The gardens at Miramare Gardens are just divine. We opted for an indoor ceremony, as we were concerned about the unpredictable weather in Spring. After the conclusion of the ceremony, our guests moved to the outdoor area to enjoy the gardens.

FOOD & DRINK: Surjit’s Indian Restaurant did a great job with all the catering. Our wedding ceremony had a small intermission of 30 minutes while I was changing into my bridal saree. This allowed our guests to move to the foyer area to stretch their legs and socialize. Guests were served innovative Indian cocktail-style entrees with a twist, thanks to Rasan from Surjits. After the ceremony, lunch was in the usual buffet format but Surjits worked collaboratively with us to select a balanced menu.

HIGHLIGHTS: When Dilshan tied the thaali around my neck, the energy of that moment was unforgettable. So many significant things were happening in tandem, the priest chanting vedic mantras, our loved ones showering flowers on us, and the Carnatic music reaching a crescendo. It beautifully captured the vibrant essence and ritual symbolism of a Hindu wedding.

South Indian Wedding Decor

Irene from VIP Decorating did all the styling in the ballroom. She was able to bring to life my vision of reflecting elements of the gardens indoors, with florals and greens decking the top of the mandap structure and delicate crimson drapes edged with vines. The ceremony section of the ballroom was set up in a theater style with chairs facing the mandap.

In the dining space, we opted for long rows of dining tables, which looked nicer than round tables in the large space. The centerpieces provided by the venue were very eclectic with fresh white florals in mismatched glass vases, dispersed along the tables in a non-orderly fashion. Irene also added tea lights and vines in between the vases to add touches of the garden theme to the dining area.

South Indian Wedding Look

ABI’S OUTFIT:  I bought both my kanchipuram silk sarees from Sundari Silks, which is a popular boutique saree store in Chennai. Their designs are unique and elegant. They have plenty of silk weaves in deep jewel tone hues, which were my favorite. I chose two sarees in deep tones of purple and a more traditional, crimson – noyh with pure gold zari thread work. I didn’t want anything over the top since less is always more.

JEWELRY & ACCESSORIES: South Indian temple jewelry from SukraJewellers and GRTJewellers. I made my own saree belts using zari borders, elastic and gold pearl trims.

SHOES: Shimmery gold pumps from Nine West.

HAIR & MAKEUP: Gather and Stitch Beauty.

DILSHAN’S OUTFIT: Cream brocade sherwani with maroon velvet embroidery details, along with a matching chunni, turban and chappals, all from Manyavar.

BRIDAL PARTY: Our bridal party comprised of some of our closest friends and we wanted to make sure they were also dressed to the nines. For the Hindu wedding, I gifted my bridesmaids with more traditional Mysore crepe silk sarees from Nalli Silks. I loved the teal green with contrast maroon zari borders and saree blouses, which tied-in with the shade of my bridal saree.

Sri Lankan Wedding & Reception

THEME: Modern and elegant with vintage touches.

VENUE: We chose Sergeants Mess as we had been to a couple of weddings there and we both fell in love with the elegance of the venue. Sergeants Mess is one of Sydney’s most coveted wedding venues, boasting incredible views of Chowder Bay. Our guests were able to move between the indoor and outdoor spaces with ease, and that’s the sort of relaxed vibe we wanted to create for the evening. The team at Sergeant’s Mess were incredibly professional, we didn’t have to worry about a thing on the day, they ran everything like clockwork.

HIGHLIGHTS: The Poruwa ceremony was set against the beautiful backdrop of Chowder Bay. Dilshan’s family set up the Poruwa structure beautifully, in the traditional style. Elegant Kandyan dancers and drummers led the bride and groom processions to the Poruwa. After the ceremony, Dilshan and I lit the traditional oil lamp as a couple and released doves over the water. The Ceremony as followed by Reception at the venue.

Our entrance was to Happy by Pharrell Williams, which set a really upbeat tone to the evening. For our first dance, we chose the song You Give Me Something by Jamiroquai. We wanted to open the dance floor with something fun and unique to celebrate how we are as a couple. Our getaway song was Sky Full of Stars by Coldplay, poetically sending us off into the star-filled night sky.

Sri Lanakan Wedding & Reception Decor

DECOR: Drosia from Flowers by Drosia dressed up our venue with white florals and cascading greens. For the bridal table, we opted for a lush floral hedge. For the centerpieces, we wanted that touch of vintage, choosing golden candelabras with cascading florals down the stems. Drosia also created an entrance feature for us with florals and vintage candleholders. The decor was perfect and not overdone, letting the elegance of the venue shine through.

SOUND & LIGHTING: Music and lighting tech for the evening was provided by Systematic Solutions. Jana has an extensive music library and was able to switch seamlessly between chart-toppers, old school, Bollywood, and baila to cater to all our guests. We were able to consult prior to the event to make sure songs we wanted on the list were included and musical cues were set for key moments. A good DJ sets the vibe for the entire evening and we couldn’t have been happier to have the professional services of Systematic Solutions.

CAKE: We ordered our wedding cake from Paintbrush Patisserie. We wanted something elegant to tie in with the venue and decor. Our cake was a three-tier vintage beauty with embossed florals with a single statement sugar peony on top. In terms of flavors, we chose coconut with white chocolate icing. She has an extensive range of flavors to choose from and can make cakes in any design you like.

Sri Lankan Wedding & Reception Look

ABI’S OUTFIT: For the Poruwa Ceremony, I wore a beautiful customized white net saree with rose gold floral embroidered borders by Shyamal&Bhumika. The final touch was the white lace blouse I had custom made by Gather and Stitch Couture, which paired perfectly with the white saree.

For the Reception, I fell in love with a modern layered lace lehenga skirt with floral thread work in a beautiful shade of scarlet red by RidhimaBhasin at Carma. I paired this with a Shyamal&Bhumika raw silk blouse with antique gold floral patta work.

JEWELRY & ACCESSORIES: Kundan accessories I’ve accumulated over the years along with pearl and kundan bracelets by Suhana Art & Jewels and a RidhimaBhasin embroidered leather belt, both via Carma.

SHOES: Open-toe nude pumps by Nine West.

HAIR & MAKEUP: Gather and Stitch Beauty.

DILSHAN’S OUTFIT: A navy blue Joe Black suit from David Jones. Formal shoes from Aldo and quirky cufflinks from Malebox.

BRIDAL PARTY: The bridesmaids wore purple chiffon sarees edged with pearl borders, together with gold brocade blouses. These were sourced online from Vogue Loving via Instagram. The owner is based in Gujarat and can liaise with local tailors to customize sarees in a variety of designs, fabrics, and colors.

The boys looked very dapper in tailored navy blue suits from Myer. The red silk ties and pocket squares were also sourced from Myer.

Overseas Reception Soiree

ABI’S OUTFIT: Payal Singhal silk mul lehenga saree in peacock blue with gold/silver embroidery work via Carma.

JEWELLERY & ACCESSORIES: Gold jhumka and bangles I picked up from Indian markets over the years, and a funky gold phoenix clutch by TariniNirula.

HAIR & MAKEUP: Myself.

Overcome Post Wedding Blues Using These 5 Tips

As a bride and groom you have been in the spotlight for quite some time now (probably since your engagement). You might have been invited for several post wedding ceremonies followed by a fantastic honeymoon by now. What eventually follows, for most couples (after the wedding and honeymoon), is the “post wedding blues” phase. If you have begun your life together but the day to day routine is getting to you, then read these 5 important tips which are sure to help you overcome the blues:

  1. Think about the objective of the wedding rituals

The wedding day rituals and ceremonies (in any culture)are there for a reason- so  that the couple understands the sacred vows of marital commitment. So, now it is time you actually show this commitment and love to your better half by implementing them in practice. You could start making some plans for the future, which could be as small as planning a romantic weekend getaway or the big ones about kids and family etc.

  1. Spend quality time with each other

We are sure the last few months must have been crazy for you with the wedding planning, the shopping etc. Now it is time to relax and get cosy. Watch a movie together, or simply cook or read or do other activities that you enjoy as a couple. If needed, visit your parents to spend some time with them.

  1. Mix with friends

As an engaged couple you might have neglected your friends; understandably so as you might have been busy with the wedding shopping, planning and arrangements. However, now is the time to you again start mixing around with friends, both his and yours-invite them for dinner, or better yet, go out with them. What better way to beat the blues than this?

  1. Take on a project

The best way to beat any sort of blues is to keep your mind occupied. Get into a routine, workout, play, meditate – or better yet, take on some project-it could be as simple as making something artistic for the home, or putting together a wedding scrapbook or simply taking up a hobby you had before the wedding.

  1. Arrange a party for uninvited friends and relatives

If you had an intimate wedding with limited number of guests, why not invite the others for a small get-together? This is the perfect time to set up the home and also put the wedding gifts to great use. You can also invite people who came for the wedding but with whom you did not have much time to interact with. A small party is ideal to help spend quality time with near and dear ones and chase the blues away.

We hope these 5 tips help you overcome the post wedding blues and get that smile back on your face.

Felicia and Allan’s Real Wedding | Shangri-La style!

We were lucky enough to catch up with Felicia and Allan, who are just about to celebrate their 1st wedding anniversary so a big congratulations from all of us at weddingsonline.  They were married last July at the Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa.  Let’s take a look at some of their stunning wedding photos and hear a bit more about their truly romantic story…….

We Met

‘Allan and I met in Hong Kong back in 2011.  We were watching fireworks at an event organised by a mutual friend.  Not long after that, he started messaging me and we started to study together every night in the Library.  He used to take me out for delicious food: yes, he knew the way to my heart!’

Shangrial Rasa Ria real wedding

Not long after that, we started dating but after a year and a half, Allan had to leave Hong Kong and go back to Sabah for family business. We had almost 4 years of long distance relationship involving a lot of tears and goodbyes, plane rides, and late night Skype calls. On December 21st 2015, during a trip to Taiwan, he proposed and we finally got married in July 2017.

Shangrial Rasa Ria real wedding

Our Wedding Theme and Venue

We have always wanted an outdoor sunset wedding.  During one of my previous trips to Sabah, Allan took me to the Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa which is out of this world!  I fell in love with the Wedding Pavilion by the beach with amazing views.  It’s so tranquil and so beautiful.  When it came the time to pick our wedding venue, our minds were fixed on this amazing place.

Our Planner

We also chose not to hire a wedding planner so while still working in Hong Kong I was coordinating all the planning from a long distance.  I was extremely lucky to have Alison, from the Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa and her wedding planning team.  They helped me out in the preparation process, attending to all my super-detailed requests on the decorations and event arrangements. Her team provided professional and incredibly helpful advice! On the day she was brilliant and rose to the occasion really well and handled the unexpected items that came along.  It was a simply fantastic experience to have such a helpful team on my big day!

We just loved how everything turned out.  Our friends and relatives were so excited to fly to Borneo.  They have  heard how beautiful it is but they never got a chance to actually visit.  So our wedding gave them the perfect excuse to come!  Our guests said that the Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort & Spa is like “a treasured island”, so serene and so beautiful.  To be honest our wedding decorations were very simple as the view already looks so photo-perfect!’

Allan and Felicia had their wedding ceremony in the beachfront Pavilion for 95 followed by some celebratory drinks.  Later in the day they moved to the Ballroom for a lavish evening reception for 250 with an 8 course Chinese banquet.

If you would like to have your destination wedding at the Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa pop over to their profile page now.

Significance of Saptapadi or Saat pheras

$

Hindu wedding is not a contract but a holy union of husband and wife who pledge to devote all that they have for each other and their family. Each and every ritual has its own significance and one of the most important rituals is the saat pheras or seven rounds or saptapadi. It’s only at the end of the saat pheras, the bride and the groom are declared as husband and wife.

While the priest chants the holy mantras, the bride and the groom move around the holy fire or agni. With each round or phera, the bride and the groom make a significant promise to each other for the rest of their lives. At the end of each phera, the bride and the groom step on a rock and and pray to God to make their love as firm as a rock. The ritual of at the end of each phera is called shilarohan or climbing a rock.

The Seven Rounds

  1. In the first round, the bride and the groom pray to the almighty to provide them with plenty of nourishment and pure food.
  2. For the second round, they pray for physical and spiritual strength so that they may be able to enjoy their life together.
  3. In the third round, they promise to earn their livelihood by by fair and honest means in order to give comfort to their family. They also promise to be loyal to each other.
  4. For the fourth phera, they promise to take care of each other and their parents and elders.
  5. During the fifth phera, they pray to the almighty to bless them with kind and courageous children. They promise to be responsible parents and help their children in becoming good human beings.
  6. In the sixth phera, they pay to God for good health and disease free life not only for themselves but also for their families.
  7. For the seventh and the last round, they pray for lifelong companionship and they promise to be  faithful towards each other. They also promise to lead their life on the basis of love and mutual trust.

Having exchanged these seven vows, the bride and the groom become husband and wife for the rest of their lives. This signifies the completion of the formal wedding ceremony. At the end of the saat pheras, the newly married couple bend together to touch the feet of their elders who in turn bless them to lead a long and a prosperous life together.

Indian Wedding Planning: Things You Should & Shouldn’t DIY

$

0

The craze of DIY or do-it-yourself in weddings has not yet reached India as much as it has in the western weddings. Still, there are many Indian wedding families that try and take on all wedding related tasks, thinking they are saving money in the process. While this may be true to an extent; certain aspects of DIY in weddings can actually backfire, costing more money, not to mention the stress that comes along with it.

So, today, we will be enlisting things you must and must not Do-it-yourself when it comes to Indian wedding planning.

What you must not DIY in Indian wedding planning

Wedding hair and makeup

what you should and should not DIY in Indian weddings

Image: Worldwide Photoworks

You get married once in a lifetime and the photos are going to create lasting memories. Do you really want to try on wedding hair and makeup all by yourself? A professional could do your hair beautifully in half the time you’d probably take and the results, let’s face it, would be more amazing.  To keep the hair-makeup costs down, why not visit a salon early in the morning? This way, you could prevent having to pay the extra fees that may be required when the professional visits the venue.

Click here to book your wedding makeup artist and hair stylist today.

Wedding decor

Most venues have their own decorator and as such they might not allow you to decorate it. Rangoli, flowers, mandap decorations etc are usually part of the complete package; whether you are getting married in a hotel or a banquet hall. Alternatively, if you are getting married in a place of worship, you could seek prior permission for getting the decorations done by members of the family.

Click here to book your decorator today.

Wedding catering

Only if it is a very small wedding with fewer than 50 guests you might consider DIY wedding catering. However; most weddings in India are huge affairs and you’d not want to compromise on the taste or quality when feeding so many guests. Also, cooking all that food can be a huge hassle. And you certainly do not want guests to criticize and complain about the food.

Wedding dress

what to DIY in your Indian wedding

Image: Sharp Shooters Company

Indian wedding sarees or lehengas are best bought from reputed vendors or stores or customized with a tailor’s help. You could of course have your wedding attire self-designed or even embroidered if you are good in that kind of thing.

Check out top wedding dress designers in the country.

What You Could DIY in Indian wedding planning

Wedding Invitations

Given the ease of designing and printing your own wedding invites these days, you can easily print them and save a lot. Alternatively, you could send out email-invitations and save paper and money. You can also ring people up personally to get their RSVPs; not only does this work wonders, it also prevents your having to print the save-the- date/RSVP cards separately.

Here are some wedding invitation vendors in case you want to outsource this aspect of wedding planning.

Wedding photography

wedding photography-should you DIY it

Image: Madhurang Studio

The question is: do you really want to? These are once-in-a-lifetime photos and no digital camera or Smartphone can match the fabulous images that a pro will give you. You can however, opt for a pre wedding shoot as DIY-ask a friend or family member to help you save tons. Also, you could save by choosing a simpler photo album (or buying it externally and creating your own wedding memories and keepsakes).

Here are the best budget wedding photographers in your city.

The wedding entertainment

A professional DJ might charge by the hour and if you are planning on having entertainment during the Sangeet, Mehendi, Main ceremony as well as the Reception, the costs can run into hundreds of thousands of rupees.  So, forgo of these and opt to play music on your iPod or simply have a good singer/entertainer from the family do the honours.

In case you change your mind, here are some top wedding entertainers in your city.

These are some of the aspects that should and should not be DIY when it comes to Indian wedding planning.

11 Easy Tips to Look Your Best On Your Wedding Day!

Wedding! That means lots of work to do, wedding planning, inviting guests, and contacting vendors and so on. All this endless planning can cause stress, if you don’t care of your health. Often, the bride and groom don’t get much time for themselves as they are busy with shopping and finishing wedding-related activities. However, it is important to have some kind of plan in place for fitness so that one can look charming and beautiful on their Big Day. If you are clueless about how to get in shape for the wedding, these 11 tips are sure to give results.

Join a Yoga class

  • Yoga is one of the best ways to keep you fit and energetic all day long.
  • Start with easy asanas and deep breathing or pranayam. Suryanamaskars are a surefire way of making your body flexible and can also give a natural glow to your skin.
  • Naturally, if you have any kind of physical ailment, it is best to seek expert advice before doing these yoga poses.

Dance your way to good health

  • Dance keeps you fit and shapes your body so that you do not need any other effort to get in shape.
  • You can also practice for your Sangeet and set up a show to wow your guests!
  • Why not join a dance class with your better half to be? It is great way to spend quality time with each other!

Eat healthy

  • Balanced diet along with exercise is a must for getting in shape.
  • Plan your diet with a nutritionist if required.
  • Avoid excess intake of tea and coffee, because both are not good for health. If needed, opt for lemon tea or green tea instead of regular tea or coffee.

Avoid/manage stress

  • Stress or tension is enemy of good health; so, in order to have sound health you must avoid both.
  • As you know you cannot avoid stress while planning for your big day, you can certainly manage it.
  • Be relaxed and share the work and planning with family and friends.
  • Drink more water- at least 3-4 liters in a day, it detoxifies the body and helps you lose weight in the process.

Don’t keep yourself hungry:

  • In order to get in shape before wedding, you shouldn’t keep yourself hungry. Starvation is not the solution to get in shape.
  • Also, many brides skip meals when they are caught up in wedding planning. It doesn’t matter how busy you are-take your meals on time.

Try to avoid alcohol or limit it

  • Both of you should quit alcohol before the wedding, but if it is not entirely possible, at least limit the intake.
  • Alcohol leads to belly fat along with a host of other problems.

Don’t skip breakfast:

  • Breakfast plays an important role in diet. It provides energy which allows you to work whole day, and if you skip this important meal it can lead to unhealthy binge-eating and, consequently, weight gain.
  • Include oats, daliya, cereals, fresh fruit smoothies and yogurt in your breakfast.

Take care of your posture

  • Believe it or not, your body posture plays an important in looking perfect in those wedding pics.
  • So check your body posture from time to time and if you don’t have perfect posture then take conscious steps to correct it.

Get 8 hours of sound sleep to relax body and mind

  • When you have to get in shape don’t forget to get sound sleep, because that can go a long way in keeping you energetic and fresh.
  • Light exercise or brisk walk daily will ensure that you get sleep.

Select perfect dress for wedding:

  • Select the best dress according to your body shape.
  • Get it customized and fitted so that it flatters your body and enhances your figure

Get help from experts

  • Choose a good makeup artist who can address your flaws and help you look your very best.
  • Apply face pack or get a good facial before the big day to address issues like pimples, blemishes etc.

We are sure these tips will help you get in shape and look your best. You can also hire a personal trainer who can help you plan your schedule.

One look at her website and social media pictures, and you will be left speechless with the beauty she captures. Sonal Dalmia, founder of Clicksunlimited Photography is an artistic, creative soul who is bestowed with the talent of capturing gorgeous images. In a candid chat with weddingsOnline India, she shares her journey of how she came to be where she is today.

How long have you been a wedding photographer? How did you start ClicksUnlimited?

I have been in this field for nearly 5 years now. I was always interested in photography and wanted to make a career in this field so I could help people capture beautiful memories. And with this view in mind, I started Clicksunlimited in 2012.

Please describe your photography style.

I describe my style as fun. I was never the one to stick to tradition.

Who or what inspires you?

Travel inspires me. I love meeting people and I seek inspiration in everyday things. Being in new places, talking to people is what I love about my job.

Can you walk us through a typical wedding consultation? How are your packages priced?

These days, candid shots are really important to couples. Also, many couples come to us saying they want amazing pictures but are also camera shy. Putting them at ease is the main thing. We make sure to create a rapport with our clients; we encourage them to be their natural selves while posing. If they are uncomfortable, we are patient enough to retake the shot. Once the couple has described their vision, we implement it to the best possibility while making our own suggestions. Our packages start from INR 1 lakh.

Please describe a challenging wedding you have shot. What made it so?

Recently we shot a wedding where the couple and their events manager had a few issues. So we had to step in and bridge the gap. At one point, we were actually playing the wedding planner and arranging for lights and décor. In the end, we managed to get some amazing shots and the couple was really happy with the result.

Kindly share 3 of your best wedding images with our readers. What makes them your favourites?

We recently shot a beautiful wedding in Mauritius. I love the following 3 images from that wedding:

How has weddingsonline India supported or helped your business?

weddingsOnline has immensely helped improve the visibility of our website. The team is amazingly friendly and we communicate regularly. They have helped us with right leads and increased our social media presence. Many brides and grooms consider weddingsonline their beloved online wedding planner partner and we suppliers are reaping the benefits of this relation.

Any advice for couples as far as their wedding photography is concerned?

A few days after the wedding, all that will be left are its awesome memories. So do prioritize on wedding photography; it is the most important aspect of wedding planning. If needed, hire two teams-one for the groom and one for the bride’s side.  And please do say yes to couple/prewedding shoot! You will definitely not regret it.
